Managing U R B a N Sustainability: an Introduction to the Special Issue

چکیده
The impact of cities on the environment increasingly dominates the debate on sustainability. Most global and regional environmental problems originate in cities. Cities concentrate increasing numbers of people and human activities; thus, they import increasing amounts of natural resources and export vast quantities of emissions and waste. Urbanization also entails major changes in the way people use natural resources. While it accelerates the transition from traditional to modern fuels, it also intensifies the use of energy and its environmental impacts. Indeed, a nation's levels of energy use and greenhouse emissions are both positively correlated with its urbanization level (Jones 1991; Hosier et al. 1993; Parikh and Shukla 1995). On the other hand, cities provide major opportunities to achieve economies of scale and use natural resources more efficiently. Compact urban settlements, for example, are generally more energy efficient than dispersed ones (Owens 1986; Newman and Kenworthy 1989, 1990; Lowe 1991; Gilbert 1992). Thus, the way cities are designed and managed can be crucial to sustainability. This special issue addresses two questions: What makes a city sustainable? And what strategies can urban managers adopt to achieve greater sustainability? What makes urban settings especially interesting is that cities are organized systems of many interacting biophysical and socioeconomic components and that the way they are organized and managed affects the level of environmental pressure that individuals exert. Whether a city's inhabitants choose a private or public transportation system to commute between home and work depends among other considerations on the avail-

The residual spectrum of $U(n,n)$; contribution from Borel subgroups
In this paper we study the residual spectrum of the quasi-split unitary group $G=U(n,n)$ defined over a number field $F$, coming from the Borel subgroups, $L_{dis}^2(G(F)backslash G(Bbb A))_T$. Due to lack of information on the local results, that is, the image of the local intertwining operators of the principal series, our results are incomplete. However, we describe a conjec...
متن کاملRelationships of components affecting neighborhood sustainability (Case study: Javadieh Neighborhood, Tehran City)
Introduction: Sustainable neighborhood development is a perspective that believes that solving the current problems of cities depends on returning to the concept of neighborhood. The neighborhood is the most fundamental unit of urban development, and the minor scale of attention to various aspects of sustainability as an urban unit with greater control over the city and as a good level for test...
متن کاملNON-POLYNOMIAL SPLINE SOLUTIONS FOR SPECIAL NONLINEAR FOURTH-ORDER BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS
We present a sixth-order non-polynomial spline method for the solutions of two-point nonlinear boundary value problem u(4)+f(x,u)=0, u(a)=α1, u''(a)= α2, u(b)= β1,u''(b)= β2, in off step points. Numerical method of sixth-order with end conditions of the order 6 is derived. The convergence analysis of the method has been discussed. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the applications ...

متن کاملOn nest modules of matrices over division rings
Let $ m , n in mathbb{N}$, $D$ be a division ring, and $M_{m times n}(D)$ denote the bimodule of all $m times n$ matrices with entries from $D$. First, we characterize one-sided submodules of $M_{m times n}(D)$ in terms of left row reduced echelon or right column reduced echelon matrices with entries from $D$. Next, we introduce the notion of a nest module of matrices with entries from $D$. We ...
